OMNI — A Solution to The Social Dilemma

Time for change

We have all had that feeling of emptiness when we realize we have spent the last hour or two scrolling through social feeds, from Twitter, to “insta”, to Facebook and so on. So much consumption, not much satisfaction, and bucket loads of wasted time.

“But! I need that many … one for messages and calls, one for posting photos, one for group chats, one for watching content, one for …”

Navigating between different social media platforms is one of those time thieves we don’t necessarily think about much, but which nonetheless drains resources.

Platform navigation not only sucks up your seconds. For people like me, who only think about the phone charger while already seated in the church for the wedding, a depleted battery is even more stressful. And when it comes to storage space, multiple platforms will gorge on your gigabytes.

Trying to remain efficient whilst logging in/out of so many accounts is frustrating for casual users, but for content creators, influencers, and brands, fragmented social accounts are like a bunch of hungry kids who all want a different meal served to them multiple times a day. If time is money (hint: it is), you’re struggling to find enough of either to keep up with their content creation demands.

If too many options and time frittered away on socials hopscotch were the only problems, you could probably just consolidate your activity (and remember to charge the phone more often … note to self). The uglier issue lurks behind the multiple hungry interfaces and warrants much more serious reflection.

The deep pockets and short arms of $noopy creepy Big Tech

Whether social media platforms are worth so much of our time and attention is an often debated topic. What’s absolutely not in question is how much our time and attention are worth to the giant tech companies behind the platforms we share ourselves with so freely.

Time spent jumping around checking, posting, swiping, sharing, liking, and commenting fulfills various human needs for connection. We know someone is making money out of it somewhere, but hey … if advertising revenue keeps the pixels flowing on my favorite site, I’ll deal with a couple of ads — and it doesn’t cost me anything, so no harm, no foul.

The fact to wise up on is nothing good comes for free: if a user isn’t paying for a product, the product is the user.

“The real transaction here isn’t you receiving enjoyment in the form of a free temporary distraction created by a media company at great expense, but rather, that media company renting your eyeballs to its advertisers.” Investopedia

Per 2019 investigation by Washington Monthly

Our clicking and swiping generate data and wealth for Big Tech in amounts I actually don’t know how to put into words … What is $91,700,000,000.00? I don’t know either, but that’s the estimated combined earnings Facebook and Google earned from users’ data in 2018. Given that money is time, you can see how our time translates to kajillions in revenue. And while Big Tech kajillionaires aren’t forcing us to endlessly scroll to fund their diamond-encrusted jet skis, it’s not only advertising that gets sold by the big guys … they’re making coin on our personal data too. While Big Tech gets paid to host ads for advertisers, what do I get paid to be tracked, labelled, indexed, profiled, and pitched to?

Absolutely $0,000,000,000.00 — (that’s pronounced ‘nuthin’)

Yep. Diddly flapping squat. Give them my eyeballs; they steal my data. Well, they don’t technically steal (if you’re into self-abuse, try spending some time with the privacy policies of the major players; never have so many words given so little cause for comfort), but that’s how it feels in reality.

But wait, there’s more! As last year’s eye opening documentary ‘The Social Dilemma’ outlined, the deeper cost is the damage done to humanity’s collective mental health. A rewired brain and increased anxiety are just some of the byproducts of algorithms and behavioral engineering deployed by social media platforms in their bid for market share and user retention.

That’s a bunch of problems. What’s the solution?

The obvious one is to go cold turkey on social media. I’ve tried that, but aside from really enjoying using social media, I actually need it for my job. And clearly, I’m not the only person fantasizing about an alternative to this uncomfortable trade-off.

While most of us whine about Zuck and the tight-fisted spy eyes of KajillionTech&Co. (as we pick up our phones to broadcast these complaints ON the very platforms we love to hate), some great minds have already built a solution.

Disrupting Dystopia

How would it be if:

  • You could access all your favorite social media functionalities on one platform
  • Your personal data was not for sale
  • You got paid just for doing what you like to do on social media

Introducing OMNI — the single interface App-of-All-Apps

OMNI houses the best features of the most popular social media apps on a single platform. It enables you to connect, communicate, and engage in all the ways you’ve come to expect, as well as leveling up newer ways of sharing, consuming, and creating content.

In addition to individual or group chats by text or HD video/audio with complete end-to-end-encryption (using the trusted Signal protocol), you have a one-stop interface for:

  • Recording selfie videos, lip-syncs, duets, and challenges (similar to TikTok)
  • Posting Instagram-like stories
  • Creating live streams (like Twitch, Youtube Live, Facebook Live, Instagram Live)
  • Setting up your own public or subscription-based YouTube-esque TV channels

And here’s where things start to get really interesting for digital entrepreneurs. Creatives and businesses with something to sell can set up eCommerce stores directly on the site, while artists will be able to create, market, and trade NFTs within the app. And for social media influencers and brands, OMNI’s pioneering Matching Algorithm will find the right influencers for the right brands, and the right brands for the right influencers, saving both sides time and making both sides money.

Show ME the money

While you’ll be able to use OMNI free-of-charge like any other free-to-use social media platform, what is completely different is how OMNI will use your personal data.

Embedded in their features is the interactive data processing framework common to all forms of social media. It still collects anonymous metrics to measure social interactions such as likes, clicks, and shares, but OMNI has built their backend from the ground up to work FOR you, not to EXPLOIT you. .

You get paid to use OMNI

  • Chatting with a friend on the app? Cha-ching
  • Sharing your latest holiday selfies with mates? Cha-ching
  • Posting content to your social sharing page? Chaaaaaa-ching

Have you ever received money from Mark Zuckerberg for chatting? I haven’t. But he has.

Zuckerberg is not a popular figure

OMNI turns Zuck’s business model on its head by adding an extra layer.

That extra layer is OMNI Coin

OMNI Coin is the App’s native currency, hosted on a Substrate-based blockchain (the same framework used to create Polkadot’s blockchain). The coin can be used within the platform to (amongst other things) tip content creators, send money to friends, or purchase products in online stores. You earn OMNI Coin for each action in the app. Tokenizing these actions incentivizes content creation and engagement. User loyalty is built by giving them a stake in the company and a share in its profits. Plus, social media hopscotch ends, and a smooth user experience leaves you with more time to do what you love (and get paid for doing it).

The more ‘social’ or user-growth-oriented your actions, the greater the rewards they generate. For example, you earn more OMNI Coin for posting a story or following another content creator than you do for chatting with one of your friends. But the simple fact remains; you can start generating a passive income stream doing what you love, from wherever you love to do it. Finally, it literally pays to call your mother for advice.

OMNI will soon be releasing a beta version of the app for you to start trying out. When the app fully rolls out, you’ll be able to share the love with friends (cha-ching), and introducing them will be rewarded (not just sneakily suggested). For those who recognize OMNI as a worthy crypto investment that will appreciate as users flood in, keep an eye on the Apollo-X launchpad in July for the OMNI IDO.

OMNI is built on the conviction that the power and wealth flowing exclusively to Big Tech belongs to normal everyday users who make it possible. Content generators should receive their fair share via transparent, rule-based blockchain solutions. Innovative technology makes it possible, and ethical companies make it happen.

OMNI delivers on a big vision with a huge future, without a social dilemma in sight.

Stay tuned as we release further details of OMNI’s revolutionary Mega-App.
